Glasgow, Domestic

Working throughout the UK our team were contracted by an award winning London architect practise located in the heart of Kensington to carry out the design, manufacture and installation of this specialist structural glass balustrade to this modern property in Glasgow, Scotland.

The balustrade consisted of a hidden restraint system located behind the stainless steel cill cladding. The glass consisted of a 15mm toughened heat soaked safety glass with a stainless steel rebated handrail fitted to the top surface. The balustrades were also fitted with an 1800mm high privacy screen to one end; this was provided in a sandblasted finish to give privacy to the occupants and their neighbours. All glass units were provided with a nominal 15mm gap between panes to allow for movement within the structure and also deflection of the units.

Some confusion often exists about the use of structural glass balustrades and the requirement of a handrail. However, we can confirm that all glass balustrades should be supplied with a handrail apart from the following two circumstances: 1. Where the balustrade is protecting a change in level less then 600mm, 2. Where a monolithic glass unit is replaced with a suitable toughened/laminated glass pane.
